This famous portrait of Cosimo II’s wife Eleanora of Toledo with their son Giovanni. Bronzino was the court painter of the Medici’s and moved portraiture in a new direction under the auspices of their patronage, a new and essentially Humanistic trait of the Renaissance. The stimulating presence of the Medici family was felt by all artists, and this gave rise to a flourishing of art, the pinnacle of which can be seen here in this double portrait.
