Bronzino, Portrait of Giovanni de’Medici as a Child

1545

Tempera on Wood

58 cm x 48 cm

Uffizi Gallery

Like the double portrait with his mother, this painting of Giovanni de’Medici displays characteristic traits of Humanism in Renaissance Florence. The child, while future leader of the Medici, is portrayed with a happy smile, truly a child and not painted as a small adult like previously seen in court portraiture. This painting and one of his sister, Bia, also by Bronzino, changed portraiture by letting in as many of the human qualities as possible, showing the essential humanity and realism of the Renaissance.
