Donatello, Penitent Magdalene

188 cm

Museo Opera del’Duomo

This wooden sculpture by Donatello was one to be damaged during the tragic flood of 1966. It is now housed in the Duomo Museum and is famed for it’s Humanist realism and it’s great sense of tragedy. Donatello’s attempt to “dramatically understand the total complexity of human life” (Clark, 28) can be seen as a great homage to Humanist ideals of combining Faith and Reason.
