Michelangelo’s Florentine Pieta, also known as a Deposition, can be classified as one of his most beautiful and poignant works. The passion and emotion in this sculpture creates a dichotomy with it’s subject matter, and binding religious events with their strong emotional ties was an essentially Humanist quality of the Renaissance. Here, Michelangelo is “pondering the value of humanistic culture as a mental activity stimulating the creative force of the artist” (Borea, 12).
