Raphael, Madonna of the Goldfinch

Oil on Wood

107 cm x 77 cm

Uffizi Gallery

Raphael, one of the most famous and accomplished of all Renaissance artists, painted this Madonna in 1506. The aesthetic of Beauty and the conflict with the religious theme of this painting are the Humanist qualities that justify it’s inclusion to this exhibition. The sense that Raphael creates here of humanity was “absolutely new in Florentine painting, consisted of a young and intact beauty that found no match for it’s perfection in the real world” (Borea, 18).
